Abigail Classical Guitarist

Abigail - Classical Guitarist, won a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Carlos Bonell and during that time was awarded the RCM Prize for the performance of a student composition and the College's major guitar prize, the Madeline Walton Prize. She appeared on a CD of British composer John Lambert's music and in the same year took part in an acclaimed performance of Boulez's Le Marteau sans Maitre.

Since then she has been in great demand as a soloist in a wide variety of venues up and down the country including the Barbican, Brighton Chapel Royal, The Hurlingham Club, St James's Piccadilly and in music clubs, music festivals and guitar societies. She has given exceptional performances of Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez with several London orchestras and has tackled some of the most challenging guitar parts of the 20th century such as Boulez's Le Marteau sans Maitre, Peter Maxwell Davies' opera The Martyrdom of St. Magnus and Schoenberg's Serenade.

One of the most dynamic and exciting classical guitarists of her generation, Abigail James is known for her exciting and moving performances of Spanish Guitar music and for her innovative programming of contemporary music from all over the world including Cuba, Argentina, Brazil, UK, USA and Australia.

Abigail's repertoire covers a wide variety of musical styles and genres with acclaimed performances of Sir Michael Tipett's The Blue Guitar, Leo Brouwer's Elogio de la Danza, and Walton's Bagatelles, together with vivid and exciting performances of Villa-Lobos' Preludes and Rodrigo's Concierto de Aranjuez. Her programmes are constructed to give every piece a context in which to shine. The success of her concerts is reflected by venues booking her again and again.

She has worked with numerous composers including Edwin Roxburgh, Michael Zev Gordon, Ottavio Negro and Maud Hodson.

As a chamber musician Abigail plays regularly as part of Ceciliana flute and guitar duo and has also performed with twentieth-century ensembles Reservoir, The Modern Consort and The Opera Group in the Conway Hall, Barbican foyer, the Warwick and Buxton Festivals. Abigail is also very experienced at providing high quality wedding entertainment.
